We sincerely appreciate all the kind words! However as you might imagine, the resources to run the site -- the disk space, bandwidth, staffing, etc. -- became increasingly too great, especially toward the end, for us to go on. (Hey--we survived the "bubble burst" in the early 2000s! That was quite a feat.)
However, in order to sustain our model of providing free, fast, and safe downloads for our users, and a place for authors to host their software, we couldn't evolve fast enough in order to make the model work in this new era of commodity broadband to the home, and the growing number of and the ease of creating micro sites for all of the various shareware authors and developers. Yes, we could have charge our authors to upload, but how many do you think would have actually paid us? And nevermind that was a dark place for us, and it rubbed against our spirit of free and open access for all.
Winsite was there in the beginning, and in the "middle." We don't know what the future holds, but please know, more than anything, we appreciate our place in history.

ReplyDeleteIt is sad that Winsite has closed down. Newer developers and visitors may not realize that Winsite has played an important role in the history of distributing files across the Internet. As a software developer, Winsite has always been the first site I released and updated my software on since the mid 1990s. Thank you for all the hard work and dedication you have given to us through the years.

ReplyDeleteWINSITE was simply the best at what they did as a distributor. I have acquired some of the most useful software anywhere. The site was so easy to use. The layout was the best. Most of the useful share I have purchased had come from winsite. Make no mistake about it, the loss of this GREAT site will be sorely missed, all across the globe. I wish you all the best in your next endeavor, there is going to be one, right guys!!

It is sad to see Winsite go. I donated to Winsite, understanding it's importance. It heralded from what I call the "Golden Age" of the Internet (pre-2000), when freedom overrode commercialism and desire for profit.

ReplyDeleteThank you for all the bandwidth over the years. I can still remember when Winsite was hosted by IU. The internet has indeed changed a lot since anon FTP (often used by hand from the command line) was the way to transfer files.
